The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest cuts a sickle-shaped arc across east-central Arizona's highlands, all of it astride the high-elevation country of the Mogollon Plateau and the White Mountains. This is an Arizona that bears little resemblance to the arid, sun-blasted deserts of southern Arizona. Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests Highlights

  • When the deserts are baking under the summer sun, it's time to head for the alpine meadows and forests atop the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains in eastern Arizona.
  • Mogollon Rim Overlook and Nature Trail will thrill you with spectacular views over endless forested ridges on an easy one-mile walk. The trailhead is just west of AZ 260, three miles north of Lakeside Ranger Station in Pinetop-Lakeside.
  • Luna Lake, four miles east of Alpine near the New Mexico border, has a campground and two mountain biking loops. The length of the upper loop is eight miles, and that of the lower loop is 2.5 miles. You'll ride in meadows and ponderosa pine forests.
  • Luna Lake offers 75 acres amidst meadows and ponderosa pines west of Alpine near the New Mexico border. Trout swim in the waters. Other attractions include a campground, mountain bike trail, and birding opportunities.
  • Greer, a village nestled in the White Mountains at an elevation of 8,500 feet, is a perfect base for exploring a variety of interconnected cross-country ski trails northwest of town.
