Alta Toquima Wilderness

Located in the Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada.

The Alta Toquima Wilderness area on the Tonopah Ranger District lies in the central portion of the Toquima Range approximately 60 miles north of Tonopah. The area is accessible by improved dirt roads from all sides, and lies within 10 miles of State Highway 376. Major access points include Pine Creek Trail at Pine Creek Campground and Pasco Canyon Trail on the east side, Moores Creek on the north, and Summit Trail via Meadow Canyon on the south side. This area is distinguished by rugged, high elevation topography, falling into the Mountain Upland and Rugged Front and Mountain Land categories. Some Table lands occur along the summit of Jefferson Peak, where glacial troughs are also found. Mount Jefferson, at 11,949 feet, is the highest peak on the Toiyabe National Forest and the fourth highest peak in Nevada. It is separated from lesser peaks to the north and south by deep canyons, and has the appearance of standing alone on the horizon. A 3,440-acre area, Mt. Jefferson Research Natural Area was set aside within the Wilderness prior to designation for the preservation and study of endemic elements.
