The Alta Toquima Wilderness area on the Tonopah Ranger District lies in the central portion of the Toquima Range approximately 60 miles north of Tonopah. Major access points include Pine Creek Trail at Pine Creek Campground and Pasco Canyon Trail on the east side, Moores Creek on the north, and Summit Trail via Meadow Canyon on the south side. It is separated from lesser peaks to the north and south by deep canyons, and has the appearance of standing alone on the horizon. A 3,440-acre area, Mt. Jefferson Research Natural Area was set aside within the Wilderness prior to designation for the preservation and study of endemic elements.
