Top Ten East Africa Classic Adventures
Yup, this is the big one. Peak-baggers simply can't miss the opportunity of climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. It rises majestic from the plains to a snowcapped height of 19,336 feet. Yet despite its height, climbing the peak does not require any specialized skill or equipment—just a gritty determination to get there. Altitude sickness can be a problem if you ascend too fast, so take things easy and enjoy the superlative views—allow five days. The last stage of the trek involves a 1:00 a.m. start in order to reach the peak for dawn—an experience you'll never forget and one well worth the effort. All trekkers must be accompanied by guides; many companies in Arusha in northern Tanzania can make arrangements, but you can also simply go the mountain base and look for a guide.
