Who wants to go on a road trip? Cruce de Lagos, a boat-bus-boat shuttle, is a great way to see two national parks in Chile's beautiful southern lake district. Starting in the town of Puerto Varas, you can speed through the route in one day, passively enjoying the mountain scenery. Or you can take your time, since there are hotels and campgrounds at each end of Lago Todos los Santos, on the Chilean side of the border. There you'll also have some opportunities for exploratory hikes. The parks themselves have decent accommodations and food. The trip ends in the famous Argentine resort of Bariloche.
To make a true active vacation out of it, go whitewater rafting on the Rmo Petrohui, canyoning up the steep ravines of Parque Nacional Vicente Pirez Rosales, or scaling snowcapped Volcan Osorno, an 8,727-foot peak that's a technical challenge.
