Attempt the Scandinavian Trek
By Bertil Lintner

While the Kungleden trail may be the oldest, it is no longer the longest marked trail in northern Scandinavia. Nordkalottleden—or the Arctic trail—begins near Kvikkjokk in northern Sweden and leads hardcore hikers 496 miles via Norway to the Finnish Lapland.

From the trailhead in Kvikkjokk, the trail flows north to Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain, then turns west into the Norwegian mountains. It enters Finland at the famed Treriksrvset—the point at which Norway, Sweden, and Finland meet—then continues for another 43 miles to Kilpisjdrvi, a settlement near a spectacular mountain lake, and on to Somasjdrvi, a small station in northernmost Finnish Lapland. Hikers can overnight in the small log cabins that dot the trail at nine-10-12-mile intervals.
