Lose the Gringo Trail: In the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve, you won't find any visitor's center or established hiking trails, but if you're looking to forge some footpaths through the cacti in this part of the Chihuahuan Desert, you'll find a wealth of enjoyment here. The reserve intersects with a mythical area called the Zone of Silence, where legend has it that not even radio waves penetrate. Local vegetation is dominated by the agave and cresote bush. As a bonus, there's an observatory within the reserve, and since you're so isolated, stargazing out here can't be beat.
