Family - Tahoe

Hike the Prey Harbor Trail, ending up at Skunk Harbor where you can don your swim trunks and go for a swim. This is an easy one-and-a-half mile trail with pretty views of the lake.

Cruise the lake on the M.S. Dixie 2 which heads out from Zephyr Cove Marina in Nevada. This is a old-style paddle-wheeler that ventures along the east and south shores, including Emerald Bay. Call 775-588-3508.

For a fishing expedition your kids are likely to enjoy, take a trip to the Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe. This is a stocked lake that offers free admission, plus bait and tackle. You don't need a license and there's no limit—you just pay for what you catch. Call 530-541-1491.

Kids love playing in snow, and in the winter Tahoe delivers the fun. Many local resorts have special classes for kids. And if you're not quite up to skiing, there are plenty of"snow play" areas where the family can slide down the slope on a sled, tobaggon, or new-fangled saucer.

Park the kids at Camp Hyatt at the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village. While you go off and play, the tikes have a variety of supervised activities, from nature walks to making S'mores (a valuable outdoor skill). Call 775-832-1234.
