Hiking Knots
Taut-Line Hitch
This knot can be used for securing lines from a grommet to a stake or tree. Because it can be tightened without being retied, it is particularly useful for tying tent and tarp guylines to a tree or stake. The knot will easily slide up and down the standing part of the line, but won't budge when strained.
- Create a bight buy passing the free end of the rope through the grommet or around the pole you are tying the rope to.
- Loop the free end twice under the standing part of the rope, moving away from the grommet or pole.
- Make another loop around the standing part with the free end, by wrapping over, then under the standing part and pulling it through the loop.
- Pull the hitch taut. It can now be worked up and down the standing part as needed and will hold tight under pressure.
