Hiking Knots

Two Half Hitches

This hitch is suited to tying a rope to a post or grommet. It can be used to tie gear to the top of your car, or for tying a guyline to your tent. When tying the other end to a stake, however, you will want to use a taut-line hitch.

  • Form a bight passing the free end of the rope through the grommet or around the pole.
  • Loop the free end around the standing part of the rope, passing it between the loop and the pole.
  • Repeat the process, placing the second half hitch beyond the first one, away from the grommet or pole.
  • Tighten the knot by pushing the half hitches together as you pull on the standing part of the rope.
