Explore the Waitomo Caves
Initially, the thought of rappelling down a 100-meter (330-foot) cliff into a massive limestone cave system—only to climb, swim, walk, then wade through an underground river past whirlpools and waterfalls—may sound intimidating. Don't panic. This subterranean canyon system is made perfectly safe by experienced guides and instructors (all gear is provided). It's an incredible place replete with immense stalactite formations, underground sculptures, fossils, and the famous galaxies of Waitomo glowworms—which are enough to make you forget the treacherous path and the darkness. Waitomo offers several cave options, including the Ruakuri Cave System, the Haggas Honking Holes, and the Lost World, which includes the vast Mangapu Cave. Experience isn't required, just a sense of humor and a desire for thrills. If this sounds like too much, take a peaceful boat trip through the glowworm caves instead.
