Top Ten Argentina Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
One of Argentina's most remote national parks, hugging the Chilean border west of the lonely Ruta 40 via a narrow but passable dirt road, Perito Moreno is home to herds of guanacos, stalked by solitary pumas. Condors, of course, hover overhead waiting for the spoils. (And take note: Don't confuse the park with either the Perito Moreno glacier, in Los Glaciares NP to the south, or the town of Perito Moreno, to the north.) Over the past few years, an Argentine-American couple in the employ of the national park service has been developing a number of campgrounds and hiking trails for the increasing trickle of visitors, which isn't likely to become a flood anytime soon. There's very little public transportation along Ruta 40, so a rental car is almost essential.
