There are hundreds of options available these days to someone interested in a walking or hiking vacation. If your dream vacation is a leisurely self-guided stroll from winery to winery in Italy's Tuscan hills, then take a look at GORP's Regional Hiking Guide. However, if you're looking for a more challenging trip, then a trek or guided backpacking trip may be for you. Maybe your dream is to stand at the foot of Mount Everest, or witness sunrise over Africa from atop Mount Kilimanjaro. If you want to carry your own pack, North America offers a wide variety of guided backpacking trips through some of the world's most pristine wilderness areas.
While most guided backpacking trips are basically the same (aside from the location and level of strenuousness), there is quite a bit of variety in styles of treks. The traditional, expedition-style trek involves guides, porters, and cooks, who together carry your gear, set up and take down camp, and prepare all the meals. There are, however, also lodge-to-lodge treks that involve far fewer (if any) porters and no cooks. Such treks have you stay in rustic mountain lodges or alpine huts and usually cost a bit less than the fully catered alternative. For the hard-core adventurer, there are also mountain-climbing treks and the occasional exploratory trek. These latter, offered by a few adventure travel companies, are trips on routes not previously offered by that company. This sort of trip offers genuine adventure, since often not even the guide is sure what to expect.
