There are 59,598 acres of designated wilderness in Vermont, all contained within the Green Mountain National Forest.

• Big Branch Wilderness Area
  6,720 acres, Manchester District
  Crossed by the Appalachian Trail, this wilderness mostly hardwood forest. In the eastern part of the wilderness you'll find Elbow Swamp, a large wetlands.
• Breadloaf Wilderness Area
  21,480 acres, Middlebury District
  Largest Vermont wilderness. The Long Trail crosses this wilderness for 17 miles. Along the way the trail traverses 11 peaks over 3,000 feet—a great hike.
• Bristol Cliffs Wilderness Area
  3,738 acres, Middlebury District
  This tiny wilderness is named after the cliffs that overhang high rocky slopes in the western part. This wilderness has no established trails.
• George D. Aiken Wilderness Area
  5,060 acres, Manchester District
  A wetlands wilderness: bring your rubber boots. Excellent fishing for brook trout.
• Lye Brook Wilderness Area
  15,680 acres, Manchester District
  Lye Brook Falls is the centerpiece for this diverse wilderness.
• Peru Peak Wilderness Area
  6,920 acres, Manchester District
  Named after trailless Peru Peak. The Appalachian/Long Trail crosses the wilderness' southern end for about 3 miles.
