Withington Wilderness

Located in the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico.

Designated by Congress in 1980, this 18,869-acre wilderness consists primarily of a portion of the eastern slopes of the San Mateo Mountains in the northern end of that mountain range. The topography is quite rugged, with elevations varying from 6,800 to 10,100 feet. Vegetation includes pinion-juniper, ponderosa pine, spruce, fir, and aspen. Three trails access this seldom visited area. Camping opportunities are limited by a lack of water sources. The Magdalena Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest administers the area.
