Located in the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas.

This 14,460-acre wilderness on the extreme southern edge of the national forest is one of the most scenic and rugged areas of the Ouachita Mountains. Caney Creek and Short Creek flow from the area into the Cossatot River along the western boundary. Topography is steep, with narrow ridgetops and creek bottoms. Elevations range from 940 to 2,330 feet. Picturesque sandstone rock outcrops and sharp ridgetops afford panoramic views of the surrounding pine-hardwood clad mountains. A 9-mile trail traverses the area east to west.

Location: 15 miles south of Mena on U. S. 59 and 71, turn left (east) on State Hwy. 246 for 17 miles, turn left (north) on Forest Road 38 for 9 miles.

NOTES AND PRECAUTIONS:

1. Use is high in this area. Especially during Spring Break and holidays. Consider using other areas during these times.
2. Avoid camping close to the creek and trails. Great campsites are plentiful up on the knolls and benches above the creek.
3. Users should avoid camping where Caney Creek and Buckeye Trails intersect due to resource damage. Many areas are have had to be closed to allow them to recover.
4. The area is used heavily during hunting seasons in April and from September to January. Wearing blaze orange is recommended.
