Special Feature. . . Austin Outdoors: Wildlife - The largest urban Mexican free-tailed bat colony in the world is just one of Austin's many wildlife treasures.

Directions to Office: Take I-35 to the downtown exit (8th Street or 6th Street). Office is in the Grant Building across from the Austin Ecological Services Office.

Location: North-west of Austin, near the intersections of Travis, Williamson, and Burnet counties.

Primary Function: Conservation of the breeding habitat for the endangered golden-checked warbler and black-capped vireo.

Habitat: Presently consists of 10,000 acres (eventual goal of 46,000 acres) of oak-juniper woods and savannahs, under refuge ownership.

Recreation and Education: Not officially open to the general public at this time, except by prior arrangement (guided bird tours).

Special Note: When officially opened, will have wildlife observation and study, particularly for neotropical migratory birds. As one of the largest open spaces under public ownership, there will be strong demand for hiking along designated trails.
