Bear Valley National Wildlife Refuge

Directions: Located 12 miles SW of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and about 1 mile W of Worden and
Highway 97.
Primary Wildlife: The primary objective of the refuge is to protect a major nighttime roosting
site for wintering bald eagles. Each winter the Klamath Basin supports the largest wintering
concentration of bald eagles (500) in the lower 48 States. The refuge has supported as many as 300 eagles
in one night.

Habitat: Heavy pine and fir timber plus juniper/grasslands. Under the current acquisition
program the refuge will contain 4,120 acres, when complete.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography.
Special Note: Due to the extreme sensitivity of bald eagles to human disturbance, the refuge is
closed each year to all public access from November through March. Eagles can be observed flying out of
and into the roost each morning and afternoon when they are using it. Viewing areas are available off
refuge. Contact the refuge for further information.
