Directions: From Albuquerque, take I-25 S. Take Exit #169 (La Joya State Game Refuge). Entrance road to the Refuge Headquarters is located on W side of I 25.

Primary Wildlife: Managed as a Research Natural Area, the refuge has both the Rocky Mountain and Desert Bighorn sheep present within its boundaries as well as elk, mountain lion, bear, and mule deer. Sixty five species of mammals, 217 avian species as well as 40 other species of vertebrates.

Habitat: 229,700 acres, consisting of four major vegetative zones: Great Basin, Great Plains, Chihuahuan Desert, and mixed Conifers.

Recreation and Education: The Refuge is closed to general public use. Permits are issued to persons representing recognized research institutions for research on the natural and physical sciences.

Special Note: Sevilleta NWR hosts the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research, and global climate change research thrusts.
