Wapack National Wildlife Refuge, located in southern New Hampshire on North Pack Monadnock Mountain, is managed as a wilderness area. The Refuge is entirely wooded upland and exposed rock.
No facilities other than a portion of the Wapack Trail are available. The trail within the Refuge is maintained by the Friends of the Wapack through a Memorandum of Understanding.
Management Programs
Terms of the deed of donation require that the refuge be managed as a "wilderness," therefore resource values are maintained through natural processes.
Accessibility
The National Wildlife Refuge System is working to ensure that facilities and programs are accessible to visitors. Please contact the refuge office for information about accessibility at this unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System.
The refuge is named for the Wapack Trail, a 21-mile spur of the Appalachian Trail. Approximately 3 miles of the Wapack Trail pass through the refuge. All visitor usage involves walking or hiking and wildlife observation. The trail reaches the peak of North Pack Monadnock Mountain (2,278 ft), which offers panoramic vistas of the countryside, especially popular in the fall when vegetation is most colorful.
The trail is maintained by the Friends of the Wapack, who have published a trail guide and who offer occasional guided walks.
Directions
The refuge is accessible on foot from the parking area at Miller State Park on Rt 101 in Peterborough NH. The trail is also accessible from East Mountain Road.
