The Migratory Bird Conservation Committee
established Currituck NWR on August 2, 1983. The purpose of
the Refuge is to preserve and protect a portion of the Outer
Banks habitat for wintering waterfowl, endangered species,
other migratory birds, and native wildlife. The Refuge is
located in the northern Currituck County along the Outer
Banks barrier strand north of Corolla, NC. The management
program consists primarily of protection strategies through
water management, vegetation management, and prescribed fire
are also employed. Public use is limited to wildlife
observation, hiking, and photography.
