Kooskia National Fish Hatchery

Route 1 Box 98-A
Kooskia, ID 83539
(208) 926-4272

Directions: Kooskia is located along U.S. Highway 12 about 75 miles E of Lewiston. From Kooskia, drive 1 mile SE along the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River to the hatchery.

Primary Wildlife: Spring chinook salmon are reared to size for release at the hatchery. They migrate to the Pacific Ocean and later return as adult fish back to the point of release. Eggs collected from adults are incubated and hatched to complete the production cycle.

Recreation and Education: The hatchery is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors may take a self guided tour. The best time to visit is in early spring, before the release of the young chinook to the river. From May through July, the adult salmon return to the hatchery. Spawning is completed in late August and early September.
