Directions: From Calipatria go N 5 miles on Highway 111, then left (W) on Sinclair Road 6 miles to refuge headquarters.

Primary Wildlife: Wintering area for waterfowl and other water birds. Peak populations in December and January. -- Endangered species include Yuma clapper rail and peregrine falcon.

Habitat: 35,484 acres of salt marsh and open water: 2,000 acres of pasture and freshwater marsh.

Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography. -- Waterfowl hunting.

Special Note: This is one of the lowest places in the United States, about 228 feet below sea level. Most of the refuge has been inundated by the rising waters of the Salton Sea. -- Tropical marine birds occur accidentally in mid- and late summer. -- Visitors should be prepared for extremely hot weather during summer months. -- Hiking trail, picnic area open sunrise to sunset all days. -- Office hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
