Great American Beach Adventure Surf Fishing at Assateague By Mark Leger
Take a break from hiring boats: too cramped, too expensive. Try dancing with the waves at Assateague National Seashore.

Assateague Island is a barrier island along Maryland's Atlantic coastjust a hop from Delaware. Summertime is generally a mild time at Assateague: the surf is gentle and the sun radiantly warm. This is the home of the famous Assateague ponies (remember Misty?), and if you beach camp, they might come clomping around your tent at night.

The nutrient-rich currents that flush along the Atlantic coast sustain a wealth of sport fish that range within casting distance of the beach. With a basic understanding of seasons, conditions, equipment, and regulations, an angler can get lucky just about any time of the year. Chances are pretty good you'll pull in croaker, corbina, stripped perch, perch, sharks, stingrays, or maybe even a flounder. Three spotsSunset, Seal Beach and Cherrycome highly recommended.
Want a lesson? You're in luck. The park staff offers demonstrations during the summer months.
