U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Virginia Projects
Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway
Two canal routes link the Chesapeake Bay at Norfolk with Albemarle Sound in North Carolina to form part of the inland waterway from Miami to New England. Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake, on the historic Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, features picnic areas for day use. It is located 4.5 miles E of 1-64 on VA 168. Deep Creek Lock also has day-use picnic areas. Located in Chesapeake, on the Dismal Swamp Canal 3 miles W of I-64 on US 17.
Gathright Dam (Lake Moomaw)
Situated within the George Washington National Forest, recreation facilities are managed by the US Forest Service. From Covington, US 220 N to VA 687, follow project signs to dam site.
John H. Kerr Reservoir
This 50,000-acre lake, one of the largest manmade lakes in the East, is noted for its record striped bass and camping facilities. Camp areas are operated by the Corps, the States of Virginia and North Carolina, and private concessionaires. From Petersburg, 70 miles SW via I-85 or US 1, then west on US 58 or VA 4.
John W. Flannagan Reservoir
Project lands adjoin Jefferson National Forest. Nearby Breaks Interstate Park contains massive geological features. From Haysi, take VA 63, 614 and 739 (total 7 ml).
North Fork of Pound Lake
A hikers' paradise, lying adjacent to the wooded hills of Jefferson National Forest. From Pound, 1 mile SW on VA 630.
Philpott Lake
Nestled in the rugged foothills of the Blue Ridge, adjoining Fairy Stone State Park. Canoe to camp sites on Deer Island. From Roanoke, S on US 220, W on VA 57, N on VA 904.
