Allatoona Lake
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is the oldest Corps lake in the southeastern U.S. Camping, hiking, marinas and cabins are available, and historic Civil War battlefields are nearby. From Atlanta, 45 miles N on I-75 to Exit 125, E on GA 20, S on GA 294 to the dam.
Carters Lake
This small scenic lake is backed up by a 445 foot-high dam in the lower reaches of the Blue Ridge. There is a power plant with pumped storage operation. From Chatsworth, 9 miles S on US 411.
J. Strom Thurmond Lake
This is the largest Corps lake east of the Mississippi River. The adjacent area abounds with historical and geological sites. J. Strom Thurmond provides excellent striper and black bass fishing and its large wildlife management areas offer some of the south's best hunting and wildlife observation opportunities. The visitor center and public overlook are located at the Natural Resource Management Center. From Augusta, GA, 20 miles N on GA 28 or 104 to GA 150. Also see listings under South Carolina.
George W. Andrews Lake
Located in an area of historical and archeological significance, Indian trails and battlegrounds are well marked. This lake features a scenic waterfall. From Albany, 60 miles W GA 62 to Hilton, follow signs to dam.
Hartwell Lake
This lake in the upstate region of Georgia and South Carolina has a reputation as an excellent location for all types of outdoor recreation activity. The area is rich in historical lore, and Clemson University adjoins the lake. The Natural Resource Management Center is located 5 miles N of Hartwell, Ga. on US 29, or 100 miles E of Atlanta on I-85. Several lake access areas are easily reached from the Hartwell Anderson or Clemson exits on I-85. Also see listings under South Carolina.
Richard B. Russell Lake
The Corps' newest lake project on the Savannah River, Iying between J. Strom Thurmond Lake to the south and Hartwell Lake to the north, Russell is one of the finest fishing lakes in the Southeast, offering both cold and warm water fisheries. The cost of construction of recreational facilities is being shared with the states of Georgia and South Carolina, and upon completion, operation and maintenance of these facilities will be assumed by the states. Russell Lake has two unique and informative visitor centers at the powerhouse and the Natural Resource Management Center. Located 20 miles E of Elberton, GA, and 8 miles W of Calhoun, SC off US 72. Lake Seminole
In a rural setting, the lake features rugged ravines, cypress ponds, limesinks and hardwood and pine forests. Nationally known for its largemouth bass and wide variety of plant and animal life, this lake offers very good birdwatching. From Tallahassee, FL, 42 miles W on US 90 to Chattahoochee, FL, 1 mile N to dam. Also see listings under Florida.
Lake Sidney Lanier
The combination of recreation facilities, panoramic views, climate, and proximity to Atlanta has attracted more visitors to this large lake than to any other Corps project. From Atlanta, I-85 N to I-985, take Exits 1 thru 7, W.
Walter F. George Lake
The area features Indian trails and mounds, battlegrounds, ante-bellum homes, and a restored village of the 1850's. From Albany, 24 miles W on GA 62 to Leary,36 miles W on GA 37 to Fort Gaines, 2 miles N on GA 39 to dam.
West Point Lake
Designed as a recreation demonstration project, this lake has fishing piers for the handicapped and other special features. Excellent camping, good fishing. From Atlanta, I-85 S and US 29.
