Directions: Muir Woods is located on the south side of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of San Francisco. To get to Muir Woods, take the Highway 1/Stinson Beach exit off Highway 101 in Mill Valley, and follow the signs to Muir Woods.

There is no public transportation to Muir Woods. Golden Gate Transit (415-332-6600) provides limited bus service to nearby areas on weekends and holidays, and commercial tour companies provide daily tours from San Francisco to Muir Woods. Additional information can be obtained by contacting these companies directly.

Planning Your Visit: Muir Woods is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to sunset. More than 1.6 million people visit Muir Woods each year. Midday hours can be extremely busy and parking is limited, so we suggest visiting before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Most people spend approximately one hour at Muir Woods. Admission is $3.00 for adults over age 17.

Park Facilities: A visitor center, bookstore, gift shop, and snack bar are located near the park entrance. A trail guide, available at the visitor center for a nominal charge, contains a self-guided nature trail, hiking map, and hiking information. Discovery Packs, which provide a hands-on learning experience for children visiting the park, and wheelchairs can be checked out at the visitor center free of charge. Short ranger talks are generally offered on weekends and holidays.

Picnic facilities are provided nearby at Muir Beach, Muir Beach Overlook, Stinson Beach,, and Mount Tamalpais State Park. Camping facilities are available at the Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpais State Park (415-388-2070), and other nearby areas.
