Several short and widely separated stretches of the canal have been rewatered and offer nice boating opportunities:

Georgetown to Violettes Lock: Mile 0-22
Big Pool: Mile 112
Little Pool: Mile 120
Town Creek: Mile 162-167

In park waters, electric motors are permitted on boats only at Big Pool and Little Pool. Otherwise, gasoline and electric motors are prohibited on boats.

Take special care if boating on the Potomac River. Canoeing on the Potomac should only be undertaken by experienced adult canoeists. Personal flotation devices are required by law in whitewater areas.

Swimming is not permitted in the canal. Swimming is also prohibited in the Potomac River bordering the District of Columbia and Montgomery County, MD, and is not recommended in other areas of the river.
