PARKS
Yosemite National Park PaddlingYosemite's two premier whitewater rivers both have the wild and scenic stamp of approval.
The Tuolomne offers 18 miles of almost continuous Class IV-V rapids. During high water flowers, the count swells to 25 major rapids, 14 of which are named stretches of rock, water and chilling turbulence. Boaters may access the River at one of two entry points: the Cherry Creek Trailhead and Launch, for a calm stretch of water upstream from the churning caldrons, and the Lumsden Boat Launch, for those that wish to have their action start immediately.
The Merced River is the more popular river, with calmer stretches that are even suitable for swimming as long as the water level is not too high. But if you know where to look, it has some lively Class IV stretchesmostly outside the park though. Rafts for the Merced can be rented at Curry Village (209) 372-8341.
