Bighorn National Forest
More Highlights
Recreation is a major activity in 1.1 million acres of the Bighorn National Forest. Outstanding scenery and a mild climate combine to provide an unforgettable outdoor experience year-round. The Forest operates 60 developed sites (campgrounds and picnic areas), has 630 of trails, 2 developed ski areas, and has recently had all three highways traversing the Forest designated as National Scenic Byways.
There is variety of wildlife on The Bighorn National Forest. Small creatures to observe are the porcupine, gopher, beaver, yellow-bellied marmot, and a variety of rabbits and squirrels. Larger animals include: moose, elk, mule and White-tailed deer, Bighorn sheep, black bear, bobcat, red fox and coyotes. Trout can be caught in almost any stream or lake on the Forest. Species include: brook brown, cutthroat, golden, and lake rainbow.
There are several interesting places to visit on and around the Bighorn National Forest. Located on Highway 14A is the Medicine Wheel. This rock formation is believed to have been built by prehistoric tribes but the purpose has long been forgotten. The Paintrock canyon is a beautiful drive on Highway 14 descending down the mountains. The canyon is mostly red shale, this the name"Paintrock". Also on Highway 14 is shell Falls, a beautiful cascading falls and interpretive center. Tongue River Cave is located on the Forest boundary in the Tongue Canyon. One Wilderness Area, the Cloud Peak Wilderness, can also be found within the Forest boundaries.
Looking for a wilderness experience in the Bighorn, but not quite ready for an extended stay in the
backcountry? Check out some of the Cloud Peak Wilderness Watch's descriptions of Semi Primitive Hiking Areas in Bighorn National Forest.
