Hiking - Dry River District
The Wild Oak National Recreation Trail is a 26-mile loop following ridgetops and circling the headwaters of the North River. Each of its three sections offers a vigorous but scenic day hike or it can provide the backpacker a nice multiple day loop. Elevations range from a low of 1,600 feet at North River Gap to 4,351 feet on Little Bald Knob, providing a variety of wildflower and wildlife viewing opportunities. Trout fishing is also possible in the streams along the trail.
From Bridgewater, take US 42 about 3 miles south to Mossy Creek. Take SR 747 about 3 miles west to Mt. Solon.
Lake SR 731 north about 1 mile. Turn left onto SR 730 and proceed about 3 miles west to the Stokesville junction. urn right on SR 718 and proceed about 1 mile north to FDR 95. The trailhead parking area is about .2 mile ahead on the right.
The North River Gorge Trail offers beautiful streamside scenery, interesting geology, and a chance to fish or view wildlife. It has gentle grades but requires fording the North River nine times and, therefore, should be hiked during periods of low water. It can be reached from a gated road leading from the south side of FDR 95 about 1 mile west of the Wild Oak Trail parking area. The trail can also be accessed upstream from the North River Campground. Parking is available along FDR 95 but is not permitted in the North River Campground, except for those actually camping there.
The Trimble Mountain Trail is a 4-mile loop offering excellent views of Reddish Knob and Shenandoah Mountain as well as opportunities for seeing wildlife. It begins on the south side of FDR 95 about 1/4 mile east of the entrance to Todd Lake.
The Cliff Trail starts across FDR 62 from the Hone Quarry day use area and offers excellent views of Shenandoah Mountain and Reddish Knob. This 2.2 mile trail climbs to Oak Knob where it ties into the Slate Springs Trail. A 6.5 mile loop can be made by continuing northwest on the Slate Springs Trail, descending on the Pond Knob Trail back to FDR 62, and then returning to Hone Quarry.
The Rocky Run ATV Complex consists of a 12-mile loop circling the headwaters of the Rocky Run drainage. It features trails ranging in difficulty from wide and easy to narrow, twisting and very challenging. The system is open to unlicensed ATV's, motorbikes, and mountain bikes. Much of it is also open to licensed full sized four-wheel drive vehicles. The system is approximately 10 miles west of Harrisonburg and is served by two trailhead parking lots.
The Rocky Run Trailhead is about a mile west of Rawley Springs off US 33. The Clines Hacking Trailhead is off the Long Run Road (FDR 72) and can be reached from Harrisonburg via State Routes 763 and 612.
