Ochoco National Forest Mountain Biking on Two-Track Trails

For mountain bike riding, the Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland (CRNG) offer many miles of two-track trails closed to motor vehicles.

Grey Butte, Crooked River National Grassland

There are many miles of both closed and open two-track roads in this scenic, high desert landscape. This area with moderate terrain, is an excellent place to ride in winter when other areas are snowed in; however, riding is discouraged when soils are wet. From Prinevile, take US Highway 26 north turning west to Lone Pine, then a quick right on FS Road 57. Go west about 3 miles 1o McCoin Orchard. For more detail, see the Grey Butte Quadrangle at a Forest Service office.

Spanish Peak

This is one of the most remote areas of the Forest. Drive 56 miles southeast of Prineville on County Road 380 to Paulina and continue another 11 miles to FS Road 42. Follow this road for 1 mile to FS Road 3810, turn north for about 8 miles to FS Road 38. Continue driving FS Road 38 east for about 7 miles to the junction with FS Road 3800-200. Park here and begin your scenic bike ride. It is about 5.5 miles to the top of Spanish Peak. A loop ride can be made by continuing on this road and following PS Road 385 south to FS Road 3820, then southeast back to FS Road 38.

McKay Saddle

Drive on FS Road 27 (paved) about 20 miles from Prineville and park near the junction of FS Road 27 and 2720. There are numerous closed and open two-track road to ride on from here. Any number of loop routes can be designed by consulting the Forest Road Atlas and by using the Dutchman Creek and Opal Mountain Quadrangles. The terrain is moderate with forests of large ponderosa pine, open meadows, and excellent vistas.

Mt. Pisgah/Indian Prairie

An excellent ride of approximately 12 miles of the historic Summit Trail which is rated "Most Difficult", this trail begins northeast of Prineville near Thompson Springs at the junction of FS Road 2630 and 2630-260. Ride 2630-260 south 4.5 miles to FS Road 22. Follow 22 west for 2.5 miles to FS Road 2200-150. Follow 2200-150 for 0.5 miles to FS Road 2630. Return to Thompson Springs by riding this road northeast for about 4.5 miles. Another interesting and more challenging route from Thompson Springs includes riding for 4 miles to FS road 2230. Ride uphill for 1.5 miles to the top of Mt. Pisgah, an active fire lookout.
