White Mountain National Forest -
Upper Nanamocomuck Ski Trail

The 9.6-mile upper Nanamocomuck is more difficult than the lower because of the length and lack of access points. If starting out at Lily Pond heading east, you will approach a steep downgrade, plus a narrow bridge at the end of the "run", so be careful. If heading west, it'll be a hefty ski uphill. According to folks at the Ranger Station, that's the most difficult mile on the entire trail. Novice skiers and those wishing loop trips may wish to start at the Bear Notch Road Access Point.

Staying Overnight

A good place to stay is Sawyer Pond Shelter. You can access the shelter from either end of the Nanamocomuck, or Sawyer River Road (off 302). Plan ahead and bring the proper equipment so your cold weather camping experience can be an enjoyable one.

Wildlife Watching While Skiing

Chickadees, jays, and squirrels may be chattering or scolding as you ski. In contrast, you may see a moose feeding quietly (or slurping loudly?) near the ponds and in the marsh areas. It is not uncommon for moose to walk on the trails. We recommend giving him the right of way. The Church pond Loop Trail provides an ungroomed opportunity to view a unique bog environment.

Miscellaneous

The Swift River, as its name implies, has rapi0d currents year round. Use only the bridges provided at the access points to cross the river.

The trail is marked with blue trail markers (blue diamonds) from Lily Pond to the Bear Notch Road.

Extra caution is necessary at junctions with snowmobile trails at Sawyer River Trail, Church Pond Road, and Rob Brook Road.

Access #1: Lily Pond is located 18 miles west of Conway and has parking for about six cars on the north side of the Kancamagus Highway. The trail starts to the east of the pond at an elevation of 2070 feet.

Access #2: - This road leaves the Kancamagus Highway 11.8 miles west of Conway. A plowed turn around area and roadside parking is available on the west side of Bear Notch Road, about 3/4 of a mile north of the Kancamagus Highway. Elevation: 1340 feet.
