White Mountain National Forest -
Hiking Mt. Washington

Many trails ascend Mt. Washington. Hikers should be experienced and carry good equipment since the weather can be extremely bad during all months. The 6288-foot mountain dominates the Presidential Range of the White Mountains and is the highest peak in the Northeast. The best, most scenic, well-marked, and most popular trail is the Tuckerman Ravine Trail, which leaves Rte. 16 behind the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. It starts off as a graded path of moderate difficulty and leads to Tuckerman Ravine. The rugged mountain cirque is famous for its spring skiing. Camping is limited to shelters and tent platforms located in the Ravine; obtain tickets at AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.

Continuing on to the summit, you will be above tree line (where the trees are 8 feet tall or less), so take extra warm clothing. The trail is marked with cairns (mounds of rocks) above tree line. Be prepared to turn back in case of bad weather or lack of time. Before you begin your climb, inquire at the Androscoggin Ranger Station or the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center information desk as to trail and weather conditions on the mountain. Be prepared with Proper clothing and footwear.
