Mount Madison

The Daniel Webster Scout Trail (4 miles - 4 hrs) starts in Dolly Copp Campground. Hikers should park at the Visitor Center parking areas. The long, hard climb is definitely not recommended as a Rte. up Mt. Madison unless you are an experienced hiker. There is a long open stretch exposed to the elements. Other trails leave from the Randolph side of the mountain. The Valley Way (via the Madison Hut and Osgood Trail - 3.9 miles - 4 hrs) or Air Line (via the Madison Hut and Osgood Trail - 4.2 miles - 4 hrs) are recommended. The AMC Madison Hut is located 3.7 miles from US Rte. 2 at the terminus of the Valley Way Trail. The summit of Madison is 0.6 miles from the hut.

The Imp Trail (6 miles - 5 hrs) is an easy, well-marked loop trail leading to the "Imp Profile" that's visible from Rte. 16 and Dolly Copp Campground. Excellent views of the Presidential Range are available from the rocky "face". Start the hike opposite the Dolly Copp Picnic Area on 16, and, following the Imp Trail, ascend to the profile (2.2 miles - 2 hrs). Continue another 0.9 mile to the North Carter Trail and another 2.3 miles back to Rte. 16, about 0.2 mile south of the starting point.

The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail to AMC Carter Notch Hut (3.8 miles - 3 hrs easy walking) is an interesting day's hike along a mountain stream into the beautiful Carter Notch. During the summer, the AMC operates a stone hut at the foot of towering cliffs near Carter Lakes. The trail leaves Rte. 16 about nine miles south of Gorham, New Hampshire.

Glen Boulder (1.45 miles - 2 hrs) is a short, steep climb that leaves Rte. 16 from the Glen Ellis Falls parking area. The trail rises above tree line at a relatively low elevation and affords tremendous views. Glen Boulder is a glacial erratic which can be seen from Rte. 16.
