The most thorough guide to the White Mountain National Forest and surrounding areas is the Appalachian Mountain Club's AMC White Mountain Guide. Its pages describe every trail in the Forest, and it comes with detailed topographical maps. Anyone undertaking more than a day's journey in the Forest should have this book.

Adventurous Traveler Bookstore - ATB has a wide selection of books on activities and destinations in and around the White Mountain National Forest.
