Scenic Driving
The Figure-8 route, about twenty miles east of the city of Helena, offers another stunning example of canyon scenery. This self-guided auto tour meanders past a magical collage of cliffs, canyons, mountains, old sapphire mines, and historical fire lookouts. A portion of the loop route has been closed indefinitely because of a washout along Trout Creek. But the water, wildlife, and scenery of places like Beaver Creek Canyon still make this route well worth the drive. Those wishing to pass through the washout area, which itself lies in the bottom of a lovely canyon, can do so either by foot or motorbike along a four-mile trail.
The Figure 8 route, an 85-mile auto tour, winds through the Big Belt Mountains northeast of Helena. A four mile portion of the drive through Trout Canyon has been washed out, so driving the entire loop is no longer possible.
