Cross Country Skiing - North Junction
The North Junction Trails consist of a series of loops, many with good wildlife-spotting. There are two loops south of the North Arm Road. The Beaver Meadow Trail is a beginner to intermediate trail that goes through an area occupied by beaver. The Moose Trail is an intermediate level trail that goes through hilly upland areas, a spruce swamp, and a beaver pond. The west end of the Beaver Meadows Trail leads to Camp Widjiwagan, where the trail follows the road through the camp. While on the road, watch for vehicles and respect camp property.
From Camp Widjiwagan, the trail crosses the North Arm Road. The North Bog Trail goes north, following Hunch Creek. This trail is not marked beyond the wilderness boundary, and only those carrying a map and compass should venture on this wilderness route. The other trails on the north side of the road follow old logging roads. There are some long downhill runs that will challenge intermediate to advanced skiers. The Ice Cliff Trail is a scenic area along high rock bluffs.
Location: North Junction Trails are located 13 miles north of Ely. From Ely, take State Highway 169 east for 1 mile to County Road 88. Turn left on County Road 88 and travel 2 miles to County Road 116 {Echo Trail). Turn right on the Echo Trail and continue 10 miles to County Road 644 {North Arm Road). Parking is provided on the left side of the road.
