Cross Country Skiing - Big Moose Trail

This 2-mile trail is easy skiing in rolling red pine and jackpine country. The trail enters the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Big Moose Lake and continues on to a campsite on the lake's rocky shoreline. A travel permit is not required for winter BWCA use, but all other wilderness regulations remain in effect.

Location: The Big Moose Trail is located about halfway between Ely and Crane Lake, Minnesota just south of the Echo Trail (County Road 116).

Access: Off Forest Rd. 464 (Moose Loop Rd.), approximately 1 1/2 miles from the eastern junction of County Rd. 116 (Echo Trail). The trailhead is signed; pull-off vehicle parking is available across the road. The Moose Loop may not be plowed in winter, however, and snowpack may inhibit vehicle accessibility.

Recreation Opportunity Class: Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized

Within a half mile from the trailhead, the trail crosses two old winter roads. Continue across both roads, veering slightly left. The rock cairns marking the way in this area may be snow-covered. Just before you get to the lake, you will pass a grassy pond. The dead snags standing there make good nesting and roosting sites for wildlife. The trail continues through a stand of white pines to a BWCA campsite on the shoreline of Big Moose Lake. This trail makes a pleasant day ski-tour.
