Cross Country Skiing - Slim Lake Trail
The Slim Lake Trail splits to the right near the parking area and goes through the forest for about a mile before tying into the south end of Slim Lake. The terrain is generally level with interesting small rises and falls. High bluffs are visible as you near Slim Lake. Take time to enjoy the scenery along the way. Stop and sun yourself on these rocky bluffs.
This trail, and associated loops, is popular for intermediate skilled skiers. This trail offers challenge to the skier's skill as well as some beautiful scenery. The trail between Slim and Kenue passes by some large druid pines that stand as reminders of our past. At the junction, Barren Ridge leads back to the North Star loop. There is a downhill to a swamp as you enter the south end of Kenue Lake. The rest of the loop crosses lakes and portages and ties into the north end of Slim Lake.
Recreation Opportunity Class: Semi-Primitive Non-motorized
Location: The Slim Lake Trail is located about 17 miles northwest of Ely on County Road #644 (North Arm Road) on Burntside Lake.
Access: One mile past the Fenske Lake Campground on County Road #116 (Echo Trail) turn on to the North Arm Road (County Rd. #644). Go for 3.5 miles and you will see the Coxey and Slim Lakes Trail sign and parking area.
Portions of this trail cross ice. Trail location has been chosen to avoid known bad ice. Ice conditions change rapidly in early and late season or during warm weather. Always be alert for changed conditions when crossing any ice. The parking area is the only facility provided. The Coxey Pond Trail served by the same parking area offers access to other networks you may want to explore another day.
