Huron-Manistee National Forest
Around the Forest
The forest's single stellar wilderness is the Nordhouse Dunes, which also happens to be the only wilderness area in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Just south of the forest is the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. Nearby the Huron-Manistee are several Michigan State Forests, including the Au Sable, Pere Marquette, and the Mackinaw. Once you cross the waters from the lower to the Upper Peninsula, you will find the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests. Also located on the UP are the Grand Island National Recreation Area, Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and Lake Superior State Forest.
Grand Rapids is an hour's drive away from the Manistee National Forest. Detroit is a five-hour drive. Chicago is four and half-hour drive away. You'll find food, gas, and lodging at the nearby towns of Big Rapids, Ludington, Harrisville, Grayling, Manistee, and Oscoda.
