Hiking

There are about 1,700 miles of hiking trails in the Forest. A number of easily reached trailheads are located in the White Pine Scenic Drive area, along US. 12 and along Road 247 adjacent to the North Fork of the Clear-water River. Before hiking any Forest trail, a check with the appropriate Ranger Station is advisable. Forest officers will be glad to help plan a hike and provide firsthand information about the area you choose to visit. Weitas Butte, Austin Ridge and Castle Butte Lookouts - These lookouts are no longer used for fire detection and are available for rent by the public during the summer. Being able to stay in a lookout tower with a commanding view of the Forest is a unique and increasingly popular recreation experience. The experience is not recommended for families with small children.

Elk Creek Fails - The area surrounding three waterfalls is a popular area of hiking, camping and picnicking. There is a half-mile walk to the fails.
