Trails leaving from the west side of Ouray are unique in that they actually begin in the city. Twin Peak Trail Head begins in a driveway at the junction of Pinecrest Drive and Queen Street. Follow signs up the driveway to a signed right fork where the trail forks and begins steadily switchbacking up the hillside above Ouray. About 1/3 mile from this junction the trail turns up into Oak Creek. A short walk to this point provides an excellent view of the city.
After turning up Oak Creek the trail soon begins a difficult and steep ascent from 3/4 mile up a chute in the mountainside. At 9,250' elevation, the trail reaches a flat bench. From this point you may continue north and connect to the Oak Creek Trail or continue up to the peak.
An entire day recommended for the climb. No dependable source of water is available along the trail.
Access: In Ouray take 7th Avenue west over the bridge and turn left up Oak Street. Take Oak Street to the top of the hill and turn right on Queen Street. The Twin Peaks Trail begins at the intersection of Pinecrest Drive and Queen Street. Follow signs up the driveway onto the trail. Minimal parking is available at the intersection.
