Gunnison National Forest
Around the Forest
You can visit our newest national park the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The status of the Black Canyon was changed from monument to park on October 21, 1999. It's sheer black walls plummet 2,000 feet to the bottom, where the mad whitewater of the Gunnison continues to carve this impressive chasm. At nearby Curecanti National Recreation Area, a labyrinth of steep canyons and fjord-like lakes beguile visitors with their beauty set against a backdrop of high mesas.
Crested Butte started out as a mining supply town and went on to become the birthplace of mountain biking. It is home to the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame. Almont is an angler's dream here the East and Taylor rivers join to become the Gunnison River. Gunnison hosts the annual Cattlemen's Days the oldest rodeo in the West. All three towns are about 130 miles southwest of Denver.
