Hiking & Backpacking

A solid stone wall circled the west side of Ediza Lake. The Minarets' jagged spikes formed the south rampart. A band of snow still surviving the August sun stretched around to Banner Peak at the opposite end. This 14-er and its companion Mt. Ritter towered over the outcropping on which I lay enjoying the sun. Between the rocky mounds, vibrant green meadows dotted with a handful of evergreens rolled down to the shore.

Ediza Lake, high in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, was my favorite of a dozen hikes during two weeks in the Inyo National Forest. Other highlights included Kearsarge Pass with its namesake pinnacles, Dusy Basin with the sheer Sierra ridge stretching across the horizon, and the lakes scattered throughout Sabrina Basin.

Accesses to this hiking wonderland spin off Highway 395 from Lee Vining to Lone Pine. Trail descriptions are listed by area north to south.
