Facilities For The Handicapped

Facilities for the handicapped on the Plumas National Forest consist primarily of toilets that accommodate wheelchairs and support bars on the walls at some campgrounds and picnic areas. Some offices are barrier free and have wheelchairs accessible rest rooms. No special facilities for the blind exist. The following sites have some accommodations for the handicapped:

  1. Frenchman Reservoir - Big Cove Campground: Two barrier free campsites (table, stove, fire ring, water spigot, concrete pad, concrete paths) are reserved for use by parties with at least one handicapped person. A rest room with separate men's and women's entrances is easily accessible. For further information, call Milford Ranger Station, (916) 253-2223.

  2. Lake Davis: Mallard Cove Boat Ramp, Camp 5 Boat Ramp, Honker Cove-Car Top Boat Launching Area. Barrier free parking area with easy access to toilets, boat ramp, and water. A short pier extends out into the water at Honker Cove and Mallard Cove.

  3. Antelope Lake - Long Point Campground: Toilets are designed to accommodate wheelchairs but are not barrier free. Campsites are not barrier free.

  4. Bucks Lake: At Sundew, Mill Creek and the Hutchins Group Campgrounds, toilets accommodate wheelchairs, but paths leading to toilets are not barrier free (narrow, rough, steep), nor are campsites barrier free. At the Bucks Lake Sandy Point Picnic Area, Boat Access and toilets accommodate wheelchairs; however, the entire area is very sandy.

  5. Three Lakes Trail head: The toilet accommodates wheelchairs. Gravel surfaces the parking area and surrounds the toilet. Access away from parking area is difficult. Narrow, rough road with sharp turns extends 10 miles from Lower Bucks Lake to Three Lakes.

  6. Grizzly Forebay Car Top Boat Launching Area: Toilet accommodates wheelchairs. Rough dirt road leads to water. Travel away from the parking area is difficult.

  7. Quincy - Massack Roadside Rest: Operated by Cal Trans. Picnic area and toilets are barrier free.

  8. Paradise Lake Picnic Area: Operated by Paradise Irrigation District. One picnic site and toilet are barrier free.

  9. Quincy Ranger Station: Located at highway 70, East Quincy, California. Barrier free access and toilets.

  10. Oroville Ranger Station: Located at 875 Mitchell, Oroville, California. Barrier free access and toilets.

  11. Challenge Ranger Station: Located at Challenge, California. Barrier free access and toilet.

The forest service would like to meet your needs. Please let them know the problems associated with facilities that were constructed to serve you. Also, they would like to know which sites you would like to see made barrier free.

Golden Access Passport

The Golden Access Passport will be issued free of charge to blind or permanently disabled persons in accordance with Public Law 96-344. The permit is valid for the life of the permittee. It entitles the holder and all who accompany them in a private non-commercial vehicle to a 50% discount of the user fee charged at National Forest Campgrounds. Where fees are charged on a per person basis, the 50% discount is applicable to the holder only. The Passport is non-transferable and does not authorize a discount for specialized recreation use fees such as group campground fees.
