Sierra National Forest
Around the Forest

The Sierra National Forest is located in central California and extends across the Sierra Nevada between Yosemite and Kings Canyon national parks. The Inyo National Forest borders it on the east. Established in 1893, it has an area of 2,207 square miles and is about 40% wilderness. It is fairly remote from any major cities, at least 200 miles from San Francisco.

Like other national Forests in the area, the Sierra was home to several Native American tribes until it was taken by storm during the gold rush. Four mines within the forest are still in operation. Some other highlights of the Sierra National Forest include Ross Cabin, Nelder Grove, Mammoth Pool, and Redinger Lake.
