Ouachita National Forest Hiking - Billy Creek Trail
Trail Highlights: The Billy Creek Trail winds down from the Talimena Scenic Byway atop Winding Stair Mountain. It offers year-round day hiking as well as horseback riding. Motorized vehicles are prohibited. The trail curves down the southern face of the mountain to Billy Creek Campground.
Surrounding Areas: Billy Creek Campground, Talimena Scenic Byway, Ouachita National Recreation Trail, Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area, Indian Nations Recreation Area, Indian Nations National Scenic and Wildlife Area.
Length: The loop from Billy Creek Campground is 8 miles. The loop from Horsethief Springs Picnic Area is 10 miles or 7 miles depending on route taken.
Directions: Take State Highway 63 to Forest Service Road 6022 North. Access can also be gained from the Talimena Scenic Byway at the Horsethief Spring Picnic Area.
Trail Information: Unsurfaced; Marked with white and yellow rectangles.
Water: Intermittent streams are located near the trail. Treat all water before drinking.
Difficulty Level: Most difficult.
History: Part of this trail was located on a turn-of-the century logging trail. In the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps crews used this route to access Talimena Scenic Byway work sites.
