Leave it to the Scandinavians to engineer one of the world's greatest railway experiences in the the frigid north of the Arctic Circle. The route (by public train) from Stockholm to Kiruna will put you more than 100 miles above the Arctic Circle and take you past all that makes this area famous. You'll climb nearly 3,000 feet into the fjords and mountains of southern Norway, then slowly descend the same distance into a fjord on the other side of the summit. Along the way, you'll also see the fjords of Aurland, Naeroy, and renowned Sognefjord, which is the longest in the world (at 126 miles), and one of the deepest (at a must-see-to-believe 4,000 feet).

Switzerland

Even those without a hankerin' for big-mountain landscapes and storybook villages can't help but appreciate the terrain covered by Switzerland's Glacier Express. The train takes you through the heart of the southern Swiss Alps, from St. Moritz to Zermatt along a path lined with razor-sharp, perennially snow-capped peaks, vast Alpine meadows, and cuckoo-clock-like chalets.
The journey takes more than seven hours, but there's no rush. Stop in the medieval town of Chur and in the surrounded-by-mountains town of Andermatt. Go any time of year. The Swiss countryside is a snowy wonderland in winter, a palette of alpine flowers in spring, and cool under a mild summer sun. See www.fo-bahn.ch/glaciere.html.

Sure, you've tracked lions and photographed charging elephants, but that doesn't mean you've seen Southern Africa. Some of the world's finest vineyards, huge sunflower farms, and Karoo thirstlands full of wild ostrich: These are what you'll be chasing on the famed, lavish Blue Train. And you'll hit the can't-miss cities as well: historic Pretoria (set amid the violet blooms of its famous Jacaranda trees) and one of the earth's most beautiful locales: Cape Town. Tickets are priced seasonally. See www.bluetrain.co.za.
