Acadia National Park
Maine

As the Northeast's lone national park, Acadia draws more than its fair share of visitors. However, it wouldn't matter where it was located: This park offers splendors and opportunities that rival any other park in the system. Acadia encompasses a small world of fresh and salt water, mountains and beaches, forests and meadows, and as such, presents a myriad of outdoor activities, from biking to swimming to fishing to climbing to wildlife watching (make sure to keep an eye out for park favorites, peregrine falcons and minke whales). You can tackle any of the 120 miles of hiking trails but be sure to hit the pathway up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point along the United States' Eastern seaboard. Or, for something different, trek off and marvel at one of the area's five lighthouses. And if you get tired, just pull up a beach chair and relax along one of its classic rocky Maine beaches. Though it's not far from New York and Boston, the lucky explorer will have no trouble finding plenty of wonderful escapes into Acadia's vast wilderness.
