Yellowstone National Park
Montana, Wyoming

America's first national park, Yellowstone still offers the premier park experience. Drive the 140-mile Grand Loop and witness the park's incredible diversity. See bison and elk up close (but don't mistake the proximity of these great beasts for docilityat least one of the ranger stations features a video of unwitting observers being mauled and gored). Maybe catch a glimpse of one of the park's famed wolves or spot a grizzly or black bear. Hike up 10,243-foot Mount Washburn and be rewarded with a vista beyond compare. Stop and see the world-famous Old Faithful erupt, or avoid the well known and visit either the Lone Star Geyser or the tallest geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser. Cast a fly in what many regard as fishing heaven. Or walk along the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. If you don't mind risking a few crowds or getting stuck in a traffic jam along the way, there's more than a fair share of memorable experiences waiting to be had.
